The Classification Process

Classification is a process of using an international system called the Harmonised System (HS) to assign a 6 digit number (often referred to as the tariff heading) to a product based on its characteristics. To determine the tariff heading, firstly we need to determine:

• which chapter it falls within
• the heading which is located within the chapter
• the sub-heading.

This forms the 6 digits from the HS system and is standard worldwide for each WCO country.
